Introduction to Injection Molds: From Fundamentals to Advanced Applications

A comprehensive guide to injection mold principles, classifications, manufacturing processes, and advanced industry applications.

A comprehensive guide to injection mold principles, classifications, manufacturing processes, and advanced industry applications.

What Is an Injection Mold

An injection mold is the core tool in the plastic injection molding process. In simple terms, it is a device that injects molten plastic into a mold cavity, which after cooling and solidification, produces a product of the desired shape. A complete injection mold typically consists of multiple functional systems including the gating system, forming parts, cooling system, ejection system, venting system, and guiding system.

The basic injection molding workflow is: Clamping → Injection → Holding → Cooling → Mold Opening → Ejection. The entire process is highly automated and well-suited for high-volume, high-precision production of complex-shaped products.

Injection Mold Overview

Main Classifications of Injection Molds

By Mold Structure

  • Two-Plate Molds: Simple in structure and lower in cost, suitable for most conventional products. This is the most common mold structure type.
  • Three-Plate Molds: By adding an extra stripper plate for pin-point gating, these are ideal for products with high aesthetic requirements and enable automatic separation of the runner from the product.

By Gating System

  • Cold Runner Molds: The plastic in the runner solidifies together with the product and is ejected. Simple in structure and manufacture, but generates runner waste.
  • Hot Runner Molds: A heating system keeps the plastic in the runner in a molten state at all times. This eliminates runner waste, shortens cycle time, and improves product consistency — the preferred solution for high-precision, high-volume production.

By Product Application

  • Automotive Molds: Large, high-precision molds for bumpers, instrument panels, door panels, and headlamps.
  • Home Appliance Molds: Molds for appearance and structural parts such as AC panels, refrigerator trims, and TV back shells.
  • Electronics Molds: Precision molds for connectors, phone housings, and charging pile shells.
  • Medical Molds: Molds for syringes, blood collection tubes, and surgical instruments that must meet cleanliness and biocompatibility requirements.

The Injection Mold Manufacturing Process

The creation of a high-quality injection mold typically goes through the following key steps:

  1. Product Analysis & Mold Design: Conduct mold flow analysis based on product drawings to determine gate location, parting line, cooling system layout, and complete 3D mold structure design.
  2. Steel Procurement & Rough Machining: Select appropriate steel grades (e.g., P20, 718H, S136, H13) based on production volume and material properties, and proceed with rough machining.
  3. Precision Machining: Complete precision machining of cavity and core through CNC high-speed milling, EDM, and wire cutting processes.
  4. Assembly & Clamping Verification: Assemble all mold components and verify parting surface fit precision on a die spotting press to ensure zero gaps.
  5. Mold Trial & Debugging: Test the mold on an injection molding machine to verify product dimensions, appearance, and performance; optimize mold and process parameters based on trial results.
  6. Delivery & Mass Production: After customer sample approval, officially deliver the mold for mass production.

High-Gloss Two-Shot Mold

High-Gloss Paint-Free Molds

Through precision mold surface polishing combined with variotherm temperature control technology, injection-molded products can achieve a high-gloss or piano-black appearance without subsequent painting. Jianlin Group has mature technical expertise in this field, helping customers eliminate painting processes and reduce VOC emissions and manufacturing costs.

Two-Shot / Multi-Shot Injection Molds

Two or more different colors or materials of plastic are sequentially injection molded within a single mold. These are widely used in automotive tail lights, instrument panel trim strips, and appliance panels that require multi-material combinations, achieving integration of function and aesthetics.

Microcellular Foam Injection Molds

Using supercritical fluids (such as N₂ or CO₂) as physical foaming agents, uniform microcellular structures are formed within the mold. This effectively reduces product weight, minimizes warpage, and improves dimensional stability — with broad application prospects in automotive lightweighting.
